Chapter Eighteen

Pain. It was all she could feel. Heat raged through her blood and pain made even her teeth ache. She shivered and moaned. Even moving an inch hurt. Siobhan’s eyes fluttered open. She frowned when her gaze saw nothing but grey. When she tilted her head, Siobhan moaned in agony, but her eyes focused on the forest floor. She lay on the ground in a different place than where she fell. Her brows furrowed as she tried to recount the last few hours.

Ezra. Her breath sucked in and she lay still as the grave, listening for any sound he was still out there. Had he stashed her here until she woke up? It didn’t make any sense for him to move her.

The other wolf. He saved her. Siobhan’s mind whirled. Who was he and where had he come from? Why had he bothered to save her at the risk of his own life? His pure white fur floated in her mind. When she touched him…Siobhan shivered. A moan escaped her at the pain of it. She had to get out of here. What if that wolf had other plans for her? Worse than Ezra’s. Her heart told her that wasn’t the case, but her mind screamed at her to run as far as she could. Ezra wasn’t dead when she fell, though he had a wound that should have killed him.

If he didn’t seal the wound with his flame. A groan escaped her throat. She’d seen it firsthand after the wolves trained too hard and sustained a serious injury. It kept them from bleeding to death and gave them time to see the healer. Every time one of them had done it, Siobhan winced in sympathy. Even though they all treated her like shit, Siobhan never liked to see anyone in pain. It affected her physically, sending an ache through her stomach and a pain in her heart. Her mother never figured out why, but Siobhan did her best to keep away from the training ring after that.

She shimmied out from underneath the rock, tears of agony streaming down her face with every movement. Her breath came in ragged gasps, but she pushed through it. Getting out of here had to be her first priority. If either of them came back for her, it might mean death. The other wolf hadn’t looked at her with violence, the opposite, in fact, but she’d be stupid to trust a strange wolf like him. Any wolf. They’d rarely treated her with anything other than disdain. Why should this one be any different? If she could get out of these damn woods, there had to be a town somewhere close. Water was her first priority. Her stomach growled, but Siobhan was too sick to recognize hunger. She was always hungry so nothing new there.

Her fingers clawed at the ground and she pulled herself up by using a massive root on the ground. A soft cry escaped her lips as she finally made it to her feet.
