We were all so stunned, nobody moved or even thought about moving. Not until Ramon let out another growl and lunged at us with his powerful wolf legs.

We scampered around the camp, while Ramon chased after us.

“What do we do?” Cora asked, raising her hands in front of her. I wasn’t sure punching a werewolf would be the best option, but I knew her sword was inside the tent. She wouldn’t use it even if she had it with her.

“Don’t hurt him!” Theron shouted. “Remember, it’s Ramon!”

Shit. How could we contain him without hurting him? He was a freaking werewolf!

Felix jumped into the fray and engaged Ramon. They circled each other, giving us some breathing room while we thought of a plan.

Don’t hurt him, I told Felix.

Busy with his blood-lusting opponent, the lion didn’t answer me.

“Any ideas how to contain a ruv?” Rye asked.

“A what?” I asked, confused.

“It means wolf,” Theron snapped. “Or werewolf.”

By Saint Sara-la-Kali, how much crazier could my world get? Tziganes, alchemists, revenants, forest protectors, wyverns … and now ruvs, or werewolves. Soon I would be meeting centaurs and mermaids.

“We need to calm him down,” Artan said.

Ryane reached inside a leather satchel. “I don’t have any elixir for that.”

“What about the potions we got from the alchemists?” Sloan asked.

Tomas gestured to the wolf a few feet from us. “Wasn’t that what made him like this in the first place? I say we stay away from those for now.”

“We don’t know what made him like this,” Theron said. “But you’re right. We shouldn’t test any more of those potions.”

“We need to stun him somehow,” I said, trying to think if any of our magic could do something like that.

“Stun!” Theron eyes widened. “I should have some tranquilizer we use on heart animals in my pack.” He scurried inside his tent. Ten seconds later, he had a tranquilizer gun and dart.

“Isn’t that too strong?” Artan asked.

Theron put the dart into the gun. “It is, but isn’t he strong now too?”

“Good point.”

Theron took a step closer and pointed the gun toward the big, brown wolf fighting the big, white lion. It was a sight to see. The moment he pulled the safety off, Ramon snapped his head to his brother. He bared his teeth.

“Shit,” Theron muttered.

Ramon lunged at him. Artan raised his hand and sent a blast of wind out. Theron squeezed the trigger. The dart buried itself in Ramon’s chest, and he fell on the ground with a loud thump.

Ramon trembled for a moment, fighting against the drug, but soon, his body started changing. His limbs shrank; the hair over his body disappeared. Theron grabbed a throw blanket from inside the tent and rushed to his brother.

“Hey,” he said, covering Ramon’s naked body with the blanket.

Ramon trembled. “That was real, right?” his voice was low and raspy. “I just became a werewolf, right?”

“Yes, you did.”

Clutching the blanket, Ramon sat up. He hissed and placed a hand on his head. “Everything hurts.” He looked up at his brother and then at us.
