OEDIPUS

My pitiable children, what you’re asking

was fully known to me. That all of you

are ill I know, and yet not one of you 60

is ill to the same measure as am I.

Your pain affects you singly, one by one,

alone and no one further. But my soul

laments for Thebes, for you, and for myself.

Therefore you do not waken me from slumber: 65

know that I have been shedding many tears,

have turned down many a road in wandering thought.

The only cure I’ve found on long reflection

I’ve set in motion, sending my wife’s brother,

Creon, Menoeceus’ son, to Phoebus’ shrine 70

in Delphi to enquire what deed, what word

will help me to procure the city’s rescue.

I’m anxious how he’s faring, for the days

are many since he left. He’s been away

an unexpected, an unlooked-for time. 75

But when he comes, then count me as a traitor

if I do not do all the god reveals.
