CHAPTER ELEVEN
Serina inhaled, then let it out slowly. "My apologies as well. I shouldn't have suggested that your value as
a human being is so… trivial. It isn't."
Apparently he hadn't been sincere enough, though Dom admired her for realizing her words hadn't
exactly been appropriate. Taking her hand, Dominor lifted it to his lips. Without an accompanying bow,
the act was more romantic than courtly. Pausing with her knuckles an inch from his mouth, he murmured,
"And yet I am still pleased you find me valuable."
Serina blushed, feeling her nerves thrill equally from his words and the press of his lips to her skin. Still,
the moment was an awkward one. Turning, she freed her hand so that she could gesture at the recesses
above their head, cones carved into the pastel-painted walls around them. Crystals filled the cones,
glowing brightly with daylight, though they were fully inside the mountain. The golden tones of the walls
echoed the feeling of sunlight, brightening the chamber despite the obviously lack of windows.
"If you have problems with claustrophobia and require actual windows rather than the daylight provided
by these suncrystals, please let me know; we have a number of guesting rooms within the mountain, but a
very limited number of chambers that have true windows."
Dominor gave her comment some thought, looking up at the glowing crystals. "I would prefer windows,
since I will be staying here upward of a year. What sort of lighting does your own chamber hold?"
"Windows and suncrystals both. If you want your own bedchamber, and if you want it with its own
windows, we only have one available at the moment. It's farther away than the inner guesting rooms,
which are these two rooms here," Serina told him, gesturing at the two doors offset from each other by a
few feet, flanking either side of the corridor they were in. "That door there leads to Mikor's and Mariel's
quarters, and this one over here leads to my own. Each has its own hearth and its own refreshing room,
and it won't take long to put out fresh linens and such."
"If I am to be sharing your bed, shouldn't I be staying in your bed?" Dominor asked her, arching one
brow. He gestured at the last door she had indicated, waiting for her to open it for them.
Pleased, and yet nervous—though she didn't know why—Serina opened her bedchamber door. Gray
light filled the room; the sky beyond the windows to the right was still leaden with clouds. The walls had
been painted in soothing shades of blue and violet, trimmed with silvery gray. The four-poster bed,
draped in a burgundy duvet and half hidden by the freestanding bookshelf at its head, faced that wall of
windows. To the left sat two chairs and a table that, from its cluttered state, was serving as a desk, and
across from the entrance were two doors.
One of those doors opened, emitting two white-clad nuns. They were murmuring to each other, but
stopped as soon as they saw Dominor standing next to Serina. He didn't recognize either of them, so they
had not been in the contingent that had traveled to Port Blueford.
