The house was the home of a solitary old man. The poor man had never been told that a young brunette girl or anyone else would pass by. A smell of alcohol wafted from his clothes. His breath remained shallow. Rhys was glad to turn his back on him, filled with the laughter of his brothers. Later, they encountered several old couples with grown children. The MacLeod brothers had agreed in advance to split the houses into different groups: they would take turn knocking on doors to avoid repeating the same speech over and over and over again.

But time was passing, and the sun reached its zenith. Still, there was no sign of life from the little Effie. By the time they finally arrived at the last dwelling house, they were getting desperate. Without a word, they slowly walked back to the inn, with a deepening gloom hanging over their head. Given that their horses were tired of walking day by day, their riders found little point in hurrying home empty-handed.

Once they crossed the staircase landing, the warm air from the fireplace caressed their faces against the chilling outdoor temperature.

Rhys walked straight to the old wooden bar, dropping his gaze to the floor. He randomly grabbed the first empty bar stool and immediately ordered a drink. As Kai was going to join his brother, he noticed Kester and Aileen sitting at the table a bit further. Even if he could only see the boy’s back, the young lady had a clear front view on him. She had just seen them coming in, fixing her gaze on them with a blank face. He felt something wrong with her. Kai, who was taken aback, walked over to the table. As he
