“Did I wake you up?” I felt a little guilty when I saw it was nine thirty. It definitely sounded like I woke her up. Cheyenne’s voice was all raspy and a bit sexy. It wasn’t that late but I wanted to talk to her. And then just thinking about the show, I know I won’t have a full night’s sleep either. What makes me feel better is that the sets are strong. We know our parts, even with Rex taking it easy during the songs in rehearsal. He knows what he needs to do, we are just tightening it up. But now, I want to let Cheyenne know and hope that she will come to the gig.

“No, I’m good Beau. Just a bit run down with a head cold. What’s up with you?” I could tell she was hiding a yawn under her breath but I needed to talk to her anyway. Call me a little bit selfish but I like how I feel when I’m talking with her. Laying up against the headboard on my bed, I made myself comfortable for our conversation.

“Well, we have our first show booked. It’s on Saturday, the Fourth of July. It’s the township’s picnic, and Uncle Mickey booked us to open for Voodoo Son. Apparently, there was a cancellation with the band that was supposed to open for them, so he got us right in.”

Cheyenne was so quiet on the other end of the phone that I was hoping she didn’t fall asleep.

“Chey, are you there or am I that boring that you fell asleep?” I waited for her response, but Cheyenne was a hard one to read. I couldn’t help thinking that she was hiding something from me again. Feeling that it was too soon in the relationship to demand things from her, I just waited to see how she responded to me.

“You are far from boring, Beau Taggert. But that’s great. Congratulations. The Sons are a good band, and you should get a lot of exposure from their audience.” I felt a false brightness in her voice that didn’t sit right with me.

“That’s what Uncle Mickey thought, too, so he jumped on it for us. It’s not like we aren’t ready for it; we are, but it’s just a case of bad nerves for me right now. I’ll get over it once we’re on stage and the music takes over for me.”

“I understand that and know you will be fine. If I’m feeling better, I’ll definitely be there for you and the guys. But if I’m not able to be there, know that I’ll be rooting for all of you.”

“Thanks Chey. If you need anything, soup, cold meds, anything, let me know, ok?” I was kind of hoping she would say to come on over but she didn’t. Instead, she cut the conversation short.

“Do you mind if I go now Beau? I really want to get some sleep to shake this off,” replied Cheyenne while sneezing in the background.

“Oh sure, of course.
