A door led to Bael’s realm. Nothing fancy. No free fall. No jumping through fiery rings. Just a boring old door.

“Figures,” I muttered under my breath.

Ezra strode beside me—close enough to touch, but he didn’t try. A smart move because if he so much as considered grasping my hand, I’d light him on fire, consequences be damned.

A horde of blue-hooded demons met us at the gate, their heads bowed in reverence. “Is that like the warrior dress code or something?” I wondered out loud. “Or does everyone just enjoy navy robes?”

“The Royal Guard is denoted by ceremonial dress,” Ezra murmured. “They wear them in all the realms, but the emblem on their chests varies. This one signifies Bael’s court, while Alastor’s guards bore his mark.”

The Archdemon in question cocked a brow at the exchange. “She knows so little?”

Ezra scoffed. “You have no idea. She knows nothing.”

All right. No more of this side chatter. “She is standing right here and is really tired of being spoken about like she’s not present.”

Alastor beamed. “Oh, bravo, little demoness. Try to channel that attitude more, especially with Ezra.”

The Archangel shook his head. “I cannot wait to leave this plane.”

“Mistress,” a blue minion said as she bowed low. “Welcome home.”

I frowned and looked to Ezra for an explanation.

“You’re royalty in this realm, Kayla. You tell them what to do.”

“Like kill you?” I asked, hopeful.

He grinned. “As my blood is tied to yours, they will be unable to carry out that order.”

I glared at him. “I thought you said I could use them to punish you.” And like an idiot, I’d believed him. Again.

“Oh, they can absolutely harm me, but they won’t be able to kill me.” He stepped into my personal space to stare down at me. I glowered right back up at him, not the least bit intimidated. “A suggestion from experience—punishment is far more enjoyable when delivered personally. Watching your army slice me up with their swords won’t be nearly as fun as you delivering the blows yourself.”

“He’s right,” Alastor agreed. “Unfortunately, you’re nowhere near good enough to land a mark on him in your current state. Perhaps Bael can fix that.”

“Are you insulting my daughter?” The voice came from a cloaked figure to our left. “Because that would make my day.”

“Bael.” Alastor smirked and shook his head. “I should have known you’d dress in disguise.”

“You can leave now.” My sperm donor’s tone denoted that remark as a command, not a suggestion.

“And here I was hoping for more of a show.” Alastor almost sounded disappointed, but nothing about him struck me as genuine.

A tall figure moved forward. “Apologies, but I’ll be flaying Ezra alive in my court, not at the gate entrance.” Bael, my father, lowered his hood, and my breath caught in my throat.

I had no idea what to expect. Recognition? Love? A sense of belonging?

How many times had I tried to picture him based on my mother’s description?

Short brown hair? Check.

Silver-blue eyes? Check.

Handsome? Check.

Serious expression? Check.

Arrogance? Check.

But I always pictured him older.
