Chapter Fourteen

“You ain’t said much these days,” Grey said as she and Corey tossed straw up onto one of the two platforms in the barn.

“Maybe I ain’t got much to say,” Corey said as she forked more straw. They were preparing the goats for a cold winter and Corey was keeping quiet, not really having anything to say that Grey would want to hear.

“That’s a little unusual,” Grey said.

Wiley, one of the goats, jumped up onto the platform and made himself at home on the fresh straw, while the rest were content feeding on the silage she and Grey had just provided.

Grey chuckled as Corey forked more straw and tossed it right on top of him. Wiley didn’t seem to mind and Corey didn’t feel like wrestling him off the platform. He did get his name honestly after all.

“As I was saying. It’s a little unusual you being so quiet and all,” Grey continued.

Corey kept working, starting in on the other platform. The goats kept warm by sleeping off the ground and the straw added extra insulation to the already well-insulated barn. She cared a lot about her animals so she always went the extra mile to make sure they were cared for. And that meant insulating the barn and providing plenty of straw for added warmth.

“How’s that little girl doing?” Grey finally asked as she finished with Wiley’s platform and joined in to help Corey with the other.

“Who?”

“You know who. Don’t play dumb. It doesn’t become you.”

“If you mean Laken, I have no idea. I assume she’s doing fine.”

“You haven’t spoken to Brin?” Grey asked, stopping her movement.

Corey frowned. “Not a word.”

“Well, why not?”

This time Corey stopped moving. “What’s it to you? You’re the one who didn’t want me talking to her in the first place.”

Grey stabbed her pitchfork into the ground and leaned on it. “Now hold on a second. I didn’t say anything of the sort. I just told you to be careful and to not fret over fixing that roof of hers if she was happy having Jimmy fix it.”

“Yeah, okay. Admit it. You were more than glad when she chose Jimmy.”

“Is that what’s eating you? That she chose Jimmy over you?”

Corey tossed her pitchfork and sank down on the platform. She yanked off her hat and scratched her head. “Well, yeah, as a matter of fact, it upsets me. I mean, why him?”

“You mean why not you?”

“Yes! I’ve done nothing but help her and that’s how she acts?”

“Maybe it’s because you have helped her so much. Maybe she feels bad about it. Didn’t want to put you out again.”

“But Jimmy Roberts? Come on, Grey. The guy’s a tool.”

Grey laughed. “I’m not sure what that means but it seems fitting.”

“I’m serious.”

“You’re really hurt over this, ain’t ya?”

Corey sighed. “I just don’t understand.”

“Well, maybe it’s for the best, if you’re feeling this strongly about it.”

“What does that mean?”

“Means maybe you feel more for her than you’ve admitted to yourself. In which case, I’m damn glad you’re staying away.
