Chapter 10

“That was weird,” said Hank, turning to me.

“That was more than weird,” I muttered. “That was just plain rude.”

“That, too,” agreed Hank.

“There’s something going on here. Something…”

“Weird?”

“Right.”

We left it at that, seeing as there was no way we were going to see Hayley that night.

I returned home to find Mom wringing her hands in the kitchen.

A feeling of dread instantly took a hold of me. “What’s wrong?” I gasped, a little breathlessly. “Is it… Harry? Is he…”

Mom turned to me with a frown. “His fever is getting worse. The doctor is up there now.”

She gathered me in a firm hug, and I could tell that she was extremely worried. I was too.

“He’ll be fine,” I assured her. “It’s Harry. He’s always fine, right?”

Mom blinked away a tear and let go of me. “Of course he is.”

But from the way she said it, it was clear she didn’t really believe it.

Moments later, the doctor came down. Unlike Mom, he didn’t look worried at all. His mustache still twirled up at the edges, his cheeks blushed, and his eyes sparkled.

“Fine looking boy,” he complimented Mom as he plunked his doctor’s bag onto a kitchen chair.

“Will he be all right?” asked Mom anxiously.

The doctor raised both eyebrows. “All right? Of course he will be all right. Why wouldn’t he be? As I told you before, it’s just a mild case of the flu. He’ll be right as rain in a day or two.”

“You really think so?”

He gave us his most charming smile. “Of course I do. Forty years of experience, my dear lady. And I’ve never once been wrong!”

He wagged his finger in my face, then pinched my cheek. “Mark my words. If that little brother of yours isn’t jumping up and down with joy by this time next week, I’ll eat my hat.”

“You don’t have a hat,” I said skeptically. I hate it when people pinch my cheek. I mean, I’m twelve—not three.

He grinned. “Excellent powers of observation, young lady. Let me put it this way, if your brother isn’t running around the house like a bat out of hell, I’ll eat my mustache! How about that, eh?”

I shrugged. For some reason, I didn’t really like this doctor.

He hadn’t been gone five minutes before the doorbell rang again.

Since Mom was upstairs with Harry, I went over to check.

To my surprise, I found Rufin Krog staring back at me.

The moment I opened the door, he waltzed in without even saying hello.

“Where is that boy?” he growled as he stormed through the hallway.

“That’s the kitchen!” I yelled when he flung wide the kitchen door.

Wheeling around, he snarled, “Where is he?”

Of course, I should have told him he had no business storming into our home like this, but the guy scared the living daylights out of me.

So I simply pointed my finger to the stairwell. Setting his jaw, he swept past me, and took the stairs two at a time.

Now, when I say that the guy scared me, I didn’t mean that he didn’t also intrigue me.
