Chapter Five

Axel

Two weeks had passed since meeting Isa at the silent auction, and we’d been talking and getting to know each other nonstop. We were at a coffee shop downtown, spending her lunch break together while she wrapped up an article two hours shy of her deadline.

“And send,” she confirmed before cheesing from ear-to-ear and closing her laptop.

“All done?”

“Signed, sealed, delivered, and now you can have the next, uh, thirteen minutes of my time,” she said, glancing down at her Apple Watch.

“I’ll take it.”

I watched her take a sip from her iced caramel latte. “These past two weeks have been nice,” she told me.

“Just nice?”

“Yeah, just nice. What’s wrong with nice?”

“Nothing at all. I’ve been enjoying my time with you, too.”

Isa and I had always met in the daytime or the early evening in a public setting, which freed up my nights whenever Jeanine allowed me to entertain her in my luxury extended stay hotel room in Seven Pines. As interested as I was in still trying to get to know Jeanine, I didn’t mind getting to know Isa at all. She was a beautiful soul, a bit high-strung at times, but it came from a good place. She made me happy.

“Do you have dinner plans tonight? Say around eight?” she inquired.

“Is that an invitation?”

“Yeah, it is. Is that an acceptance?”

“For sure. Send me the address, and I’ll be there with bells on.”

“No need for the bells; just bring your body,” she hinted.

I smirked. “Noted.”

Before taking things a step further with Isa, I knew I needed to figure out where I stood with Jeanine. She made it clear what she wanted from the beginning, yet we’d become so open with one another when our clothes were off. I wasn’t sure if I was ready to bottle up all my feelings for her and toss them aside, but at the same time, I could see myself building something real with Isa.

My phone started vibrating against the wooden table, tearing me out of my thoughts. “One second,” I told her before placing my phone up to my ear. “Hello?”

“Axel. Where are you?” my father asked in a rushed tone.

“Downtown. Why?”

“I need you to come home, now! It’s your mother.”

I promptly stood to my feet as alarms rang out through my entire body. “Is she okay? What’s wrong?”

“Just get here!” he yelled before ending the call.

Isa stood to her feet, staring at me with concern in her eyes. “Is everything okay?”

“I don’t know. I have to go. I’ll call you later.”

“Okay, okay. Go!”
