Chapter Six

Bleu

“You care to elaborate?” I asked, taking my eyes off the road to devour her from head to toe. Her warm, sienna brown complexion shimmered under the yellow moonlight.

“Not really,” she countered.

“Why not?”

“Because what difference is it gonna make? Plus, I said what I had to say to you earlier.”

“Maybe I want you to repeat it,” I told her.

Imani exhaled a huff of fury. People from Seven Pines and Potomac Falls were like oil and water. Nine times out of ten, it was never a good fuckin’ idea to mix the two. Izzy and I were the first to prove that shit wrong. The same didn’t go for Imani and me. Because Izzy was my right hand, his baby sister had always been off-limits. As untouchable as she was, she still managed to carve a space out in my heart. An irreplaceable area that only she had the power to fill. Only back then, I knew what came along with the life I was living. She didn’t deserve to live through shit like that for the third time. She’d already lived through the heartbreak of losing her father and then Izzy. I couldn’t hold her back from another nigga that could love her better.

“And maybe you should talk about where this sudden change of heart came from. Because the vibe I’m getting right now is a complete 180-degree change from what it was back then,” she replied.

“That’s because the night you told me all that shit, I didn’t know how to react. A part of me was happy about it because it wasn’t like I never noticed you. I’d always thought you were beautiful, but because of my relationship with Izzy, I knew I could never have you.”

“And yet you listened to me pour out my heart to you, kissed me, and then left me standing in the middle of the hospital parking lot the night my brother died!” she snapped, ready for a war.

I twisted my lips to the side. “As fucked up as it sounds, I couldn’t help myself. You were leaving, and I kept tellin’ myself that it wouldn’t be long before some college boy swept you off your feet and shit. So, I said fuck it, and I kissed you. I didn’t think it would be another eight years before I’d see you again, but with the way shit turned out, I’m glad I did it then, and I’m glad I did it tonight,” I admitted.

She smacked her lips, letting my confession go in one ear and straight out of the other. “How long are you gonna let my brother be the excuse you hide behind?”

“I ain’t hidin’ behind shit. You can never question my loyalty to him, but I’ve paid my dues to Izzy. As soon as I crossed the bridge that night, I got pulled over and hauled off to jail. Niggas set me up on some drug shit and killed my best fuckin’ friend, and I couldn’t be there for him or all of you.
