Chapter 13

Pauline Pakula hung the phone up after talking to Abigail. It left her with a sick feeling in the pit of her stomach. Her daughters had that effect on her. Of course, Marley was out of the picture, thank God. But Abigail was like a reoccurring nightmare. Just as Pauline would forget about her, she’d pop up again.

The problem was that she knew she’d done something horrible to her girls, but if she apologized to them, where would it end? It was better to allow them to be angry with her, and hopefully, the worst abuse would never come to the surface. When they were growing up, it was a normal way of life to discipline them the way her mother had disciplined her. But then suddenly, right after Abigail killed Dan Ware, she had an epiphany. Beating her girls had been vicious, wrong. She’d rationalized it somehow in the prior years; hearing about other abuse cases didn’t affect her because what she did wasn’t the same thing. When they’d received the call to get the boys after their daughter was arrested for murder, she recognized that she’d come within inches of killing her own two girls.

One particular incident still made her sick when she thought of it. When they were in their early teens, Abigail accidently used bleach on a washer load of Hubert’s colored clothes. Most of it was ruined, but there was nothing special about any of it, just run-of-the-mill T-shirts and pants. She took her anger out on Abigail and beat her with her fists. The injury to her face was so bad, she wasn’t able to leave the house for two weeks; someone would have called the police. Pauline felt terrible, but she couldn’t bring herself to apologize. Instead, she made ice packs for her and cared for her as if she had the flu or a broken arm.
