Chapter 10
Not long after the sirenâs wail had faded, Cooper saw Trevor and Maggie coming through the ranch gate. Glory shot off the front porch and went bounding out to greet them, all wags and happy little yips.
âBack so soon?â Cooper asked as they came inside.
It was Maggie who answered. âWhen we heard the siren, Skip said he had to go home and be with his mom. He took his sisters and left. Abner needed a nap, so we stopped working and came home.â
âWait. Did you say Skip was there?â
Maggie nodded. She was still slightly out of breath. âHe and his little sisters needed a place to stay because his stepdad was drinking. He wanted to help with the sleigh, so we let him.â
Cooperâs gaze turned to Trevor. âSo Skip is your friend now?â
Trevor shrugged. âI guess so. I was still mad at first, but after he apologized about Halloween, I forgave him.â
âWhat about Cody?â
âHe moved away. So Skip doesnât have a friend either now. Maybe we could have him over to hang out sometime. Things are pretty rough at his house.â
âMaybe. Weâll see.â Cooper would need time to get used to the idea.
âUncle Cooper, may I use your phone?â Maggie asked. âI need to let my mom know Iâm here so she can come and get me.â
âIâve got a better idea,â Jess said. âWhy donât you stay for dinner? Then later, one of us can drive you home.â
âIâll ask my mom if itâs all right.â Maggie skipped over to the phone, made a brief call, and turned around with a happy grin on her face. âShe said yes!â
âGreat,â Jess said. âIâm making chow mein. If you want to help, Iâll show you how itâs done. Let me get set up in the kitchen. Then Iâll call you. Okay?â
âYou bet.â Maggie glanced around the living room. âUncle Cooper, you donât have any Christmas decorations up.â
âNo, I guess I donât.â Cooper had lived without Christmas decorations since his divorce. On the holidays when heâd had Trevor, theyâd usually taken a trip somewhere, like Hawaii. âI figure Christmas will come whether we have decorations or not.â
A dismayed look crossed Maggieâs face. âBut at least youâve got to have a tree. Weâve already got our tree up at home. My first momâmy birth momâloved Christmas. We put all her special ornaments on our tree to remember her.â
âThatâs nice for you, I guess. But Iâve never been that big on celebrating Christmas.â
âYouâre a Scrooge, Uncle Cooper! Do you know who Scrooge was?â
âI do, and Iâd say he had the right idea.â Cooper was teasing her now, only half serious. âBah! Humbug!â
âWell, maybe you donât need a Christmas tree. But Trevor deserves to have oneâdonât you, Trevor?â
âI guess it would be okay.â Trevor had just emerged from the hall, where heâd gone to wash up in the bathroom.
âSee, he doesnât even care,â Cooper said.
âCare about what?â Jess stepped out of the kitchen, drying her hands on a towel.
âUncle Cooper doesnât want to get a Christmas tree! Thatâs just plain wrong.
