Crazy Fun

After a couple of weeks, I was able to get a three-hour pass to leave campus along with two other patients. Before the nurse disengaged the magnetic doors, everyone shouted at us to bring back some movies. After enjoying dinner at a Chinese restaurant, we stopped at the local video store—remember those?

“We’d like to rent these movies,” said one of my new friends, handing the videos to the woman behind the counter.

“Of course,” she said. “Do you have a membership here?”

“No, sorry, I don’t.”

“No problem. Just give me your address, and we’ll rent them to you.”

With split-second brilliance, my friend turned the moment on its head. Fixing her with a thousand-yard stare, he slowly intoned, “Our address is Cedar Springs Psychiatric Hospital.” Looking at me, he said, “He writes books and I fly jet planes.”

The woman gave us an eye-popping stare and then explained that she had to talk to her manager. After she disappeared into the office, we doubled over laughing. Possibly the funniest part was that everything he had said was essentially true. Once “psychiatric hospital” was mentioned, she could only imagine the worst.

Later that night we sat on the couch with other patients, roaring over What About Bob?, a movie about a mental patient who was more normal that the psychiatrist who treated him. It seemed clear to us that the main difference between folks on the inside and those on the outside is just that. It’s a matter of location. Everyone has their stuff.
