Muhammad Hyatt Khan was Nicholson’s orderly. His father Hassan Khan, headman of Hassan Abdal, was a friend of Nicholson’s after the fight at the Margalla Pass. When Nicholson joined the British Army before Chillianwalla he heard that Hassan Khan had been murdered. He sent a message to Fatteh Khan Dreg, another notable of Hassan Abdal whom he suspected of being in some way privy to the murder: ‘If I get through this I’ll hang you for being privy to the murder of Hassan Khan, unless you revenge him by killing the murderer.’ When Fatteh Khan got the message he acted. Riding from Wah to Hassan Abdal, one of Fatteh Khan’s men came up behind the murderer and shot him! Nicholson took charge of Hassan Khan’s son and brought him up.

This note helps to make sense of a story of Abbott’s in which he states that one of the chiefs killed at the Margalla burj ‘left a young son, upon whom Nicholson lavished much care and attention’. Abbott wrongly calls this chief ‘Futteh Khan’, but he was almost certainly Fatteh Khan’s half-brother Hassan Karam Khan Khattar whose son was Muhammad Hayat Khan. Abbott continues:
