Chapter 7 - Arlo

I still didn’t trust that we were in the clear from Xander and whatever backup he had with him. We were still quite near the facility, I knew that much, and while we had been lucky that there was a river nearby, it wouldn’t keep us safe forever. We were going to have to move, but I didn’t know where to yet.

I left Liv with her third cup of coffee to check the area again. I don’t think I’d ever seen anyone enjoy a cup of coffee as much as she did. It was fascinating to watch her hold and cherish the cup. Even the steam seemed to breathe life into her as she held the cup under her chin and let it wash over her.

Liv. Liv. Liv.

I couldn’t get her out of my head. I was trying to concentrate, to see what my nose could pick up, to see what tracks I might spy to give any indication of human or shifter interference, but all I could see was her face. I hadn’t felt this way before, not even with the one who ran off with Rogan. This was something different entirely.

Liv had to be my mate. I was almost certain of it.

I steadied myself against a tree. This had huge implications. It would mean giving up the Bear Justice MC, giving up my livelihood. What would I do if I wasn’t wandering the country with the Bear Justice MC? How would I provide for Liv if she was my mate, if she was truly the one who I was to spend my life with?

“It doesn’t matter,” I said out loud. Nothing mattered at all. All that mattered was that she was my mate and that we were going to be together. That was, if she would have me. But if we were mates, surely she would experience our connection too?

She had been strange after I’d told her about Rogan being my assignment, almost as if I had twisted a truth. She asked me questions on repeat until she finally seemed to come around. If it’d been anyone else, I would have left the room. I didn’t like being interrogated. But she wasn’t anyone. She was my mate. The whole time, all I could think was how desperate I was for her to believe me, to trust me, even a little bit.

I think I’d managed to get that far. Something in her stance had changed. She’d relaxed a little, softened a little, and let down her guard.

I walked for miles around the cabin, looking from every vantage point I could find for ways in which Xander and his crew might possibly be able to find us, either by road or otherwise. There was a road a mile away from the house, with a dirt track drive that led to the cabin. It was overgrown with brush, and leaves nearly covered it entirely. This would at least make it a little more difficult to get a vehicle up here if they were looking for us.
