EXECUTABLE SPECIFICATION

In the development process of complex systems (e.g. chip design) there is usually a customer and application oriented concept engineering group which specifies all parts of the system. These specifications are implemented by the design team, which creates the microarchitecture and focuses on cost and performance optimizations. The problem is, that native language, used for these specifications, always is ambiguous, leaving room for interpretation. The misinterpretation is sometimes only detected, once the new chip is plugged into the board one or two years later.

In case the concept engineering team provides models as executable specifications of components or even for whole systems to the customer as well as the design team, a significant improvement of the link between requirement and implementation is reached:

The customer can check, whether the requirements have been fully understood and considered by the concept engineering. An additional motivation is the fact that the development of (low level) software can be started immediately.
