Austria, Burgenland; December 19, ca. 04:30

In the open-top Einheits-Pkw, which had been produced by Auto Union for the German army for a good year, there was a man in the front passenger seat and two soldiers in the back. They had raised the collars of their coats against the cold and kept their heads as low as possible in their clothing. They held their 98K carbines between their legs. Over their hands they had pulled on the poor woolen gloves that were part of their standard equipment.

Coming from Wulkaprodersdorf, they turned left in Siegendorf to get to Oggau via St. Margarethen and Rust. So far, they hadn't met a soul on this cold stormy night.

“That's a load of garbage. Who's supposed to be hanging around here? In winds like this, it's blown up things other than an old parachute. I don't know about the new ones here,” the passenger grumbled to himself. The driver just nodded. His face felt frozen stiff.

He let the vehicle glide slowly through the small village. Everything was pitch black. Nothing was moving in the street. He only accelerated again after the last house on the gravel road that led on towards St. Margarethen.
