Are You Trying to Kill Her?

Your right wing has just sprinted 50 yards to jump into the attack. Then, because the attack broke down, she immediately had to turn around and sprint 60 yards back toward your goal where she slide-tackled the ball back for your team. The ball caroms directly to your feet and you see a wonderfully inviting opening, again up the right side. You pass the ball out there, 20 yards in front of that right winger, so she can run onto it and lead the next attack. So here’s my question: Are you trying to kill her?

Okay, you’re not actually going to kill her by playing that ball. Why not? Because she’s not going to get to it. She probably won’t even make much of an attempt to get to it. Why’s that? Because she’s exhausted! How do I know? Because she’s standing there, hunched over, with her hands on her knees. She needs a break!

You’ve got to apply some common sense to the big picture. You’ve got to notice when a teammate has produced an intensive burst of hard work and then you’ve got to recognize that she could use a few seconds to catch her breath. In those moments of intellectual clarity, play the ball to one of your other teammates. As brilliant as your pass to the right side might have been, it’s useless if your teammate can’t run onto it.

Note for Coaches: This type of situation can occur in any number of the exercises you do at training, whether it’s a full-field scrimmage or a possession drill. When you see it happen, stop the exercise and explain it to all of your players at once. This is one of those things you don’t want to have to teach one player at a time. When a player has distinguished herself with a burst of exceptional effort, you reward her by letting her rest for a few seconds.
