THE (NON) DANGEROUS PLAY

We’ve all experienced this: An opponent falls on the ball. You hover over her waiting for the referee to whistle a dangerous play. Instead, the opponent stands up and maintains possession of the ball and the whistle never blows.

Yes, it can be maddening, but a lot of officials don’t want to stop the play until it becomes legitimately dangerous. So you have to make it that way.

Disclaimer: The rest of this chapter in no way, shape or form suggests, recommends or otherwise means to imply that you should intentionally inflict pain or injury on your opponent. As a matter of fact, the whole purpose of this concept is to get the referee to blow the whistle without harming your opponent.

Okay, back to our story. How do we get the referee to blow that whistle? By convincing him that the player on the ground is in imminent danger. And how do you do that? Simple.

As soon as that opponent lands on the ball, immediately deliver a rapid succession of toe pokes at the ball. There’s no need to wind up and kick – so don’t! Just shuffle your feet as close as possible to your fallen opponent’s body and poke, poke, poke. Remember, the object is to present an illusion of danger, not actually induce it. If the ball is underneath your opponent you should be able to get your foot underneath her without your toe ever actually touching her.

Okay, so the girl on the ground may get a bit peeved by your aggression and the opposing fans will go mental for about ten seconds, especially when the referee awards the free-kick to you - which he will – but the bottom line is that your team will be given the ball.

Note for Coaches: I don’t know of any great way to train this concept. Just show it to your players and hopefully they’ll remember it when the time comes.
