The Silence of the Country

You probably didn’t think that the sound decibels of life would be an adjustment when you moved to the country. But the volume, especially at night, is noticeably turned down. Depending on how far you go into the wilderness, you may have little to no traffic noise and, for that matter, no light pollution. It is an idyllic existence under the stars, and this can also be a little bit unsettling at first.

If you aren’t used to it, complete silence can be unnerving. Silence translates to every little snap and noise in the woods reverberating, and every creak of an old house amplified like ghosts. After several years of rural living, we check the window and watch every car that goes by our home after dark until their tail-lights disappear. Because it is so unusual to hear or see a car at night, you always wonder where they are going and feel the need to verify it isn’t stopping at our address.

Alertness is a good thing. This sense of heightened awareness may mean you hear a predator before it gets to your chickens. But it is also important to be able to relax, and it often just takes time and getting used to what noises are normal versus what should be cause for attention.
