Zambia, Zambia, free men we stand,

Under the flag, of our land, Zambia, Zambia.

Johan comes home from work one night ecstatic. The rice trial reports are in.

"It's definitive," he says. "Rice can be grown early and with a very promising yield on the Nyengo Plain! Do you know what that means?"

I pick up Kristina and listen to Johan talk.

"An early rice crop can be considered a new subsistence crop! It will help to alleviate shortages of food. Don't you see? At the very time of year when other food crops are still in the fields and not yet mature, there will be rice ready to harvest. Rice ready to eat!"

Kristina squirms in my arms. She is tired and ready for bed. She begins to cry and I walk around to soothe her.

I am happy for Johan.

But somehow I feel like crying, too.
