A CULTURAL ADDICTION

In 2018 a report was released by Ofcom that showed the average adult in the UK is spending 24 hours a week online (just under 3.5 hours a day). One in five spend as many as 40 hours a week online.13

Unsurprisingly, smartphones are the catalyst for this. It is estimated that 78 per cent of the UK population now own a smartphone, and this figure rises to 95 per cent among 16–24-year-olds. Once you remove the younger and older ends of the age spectrum, you can begin to understand that smartphone usage will reach near saturation point over the next decade.

People in the UK now check their smartphones, on average, every 12 minutes of the waking day,14 and 25 per cent of smartphone owners use Instagram.15

So when church leaders ask me how to be seen and heard in our digital culture, I tend to give two tips:

1.be mobile;

2.go where your people are.
