Chapter Thirteen

Eren sat in the dark room for a couple of hours, knowing that if he got him and Riley out, he’d have to take his beloved pet to Grandfather. The knowledge burned like utter fire.

Grandfather had known of Riley’s existence, although how was a mystery. Somehow, he’d even known where Riley was. Eren figured it was the same wraith, Bellim, who had pretended to be Mother had something to do with that, although he couldn't quite figure out how.

Refusal to bring Riley to the realm wouldn’t have gone well for Eren. He'd had someone set the spell near where he lived to lure him. How he wished he could have told Grandfather to go fuck himself, but he’d never had a choice in this. Even if he killed himself to cut off Grandfather’s power for a bit, he’d use Eren’s heir. How could he doom a child to such a fate even if he'd never meet it?

He thumped his head against the wall in anger. Once Grandfather was done using Riley’s power to defeat all opposition, Eren could have him back, but his pet would probably be broken by that point. The only thing Eren loved would be a shell.

He’d heard creaks that Riley was upstairs somewhere. It’d be kinder to kill him and end it, but Eren didn’t see how he was supposed to bring his scythe down on him. It was unthinkable. There was nowhere they could go. Nowhere to escape. Just a burden that would be passed down if Eren didn’t win this war and do what Grandfather ordered.

Even if Riley died, Grandfather would soon get what he wanted. It would just take longer.

A couple of hours passed, and he figured he’d go try to talk to Riley. Maybe if he groveled for forgiveness, Riley would give it in part, but the idea turned his stomach. Demon lords didn’t grovel. What he really wanted to do was lay Riley down and make him gasp with pleasure.

The pain came without warning. The stabbing was just as bad as if he was in the tomb. He bit his tongue hard enough to taste blood and still couldn’t stop himself from screaming. He couldn’t do this now. What if the walls closed in on him? He’d never get out.

“RILEY!”

Eren dug his fingers into the floor, wishing for a way out. He was always trapped. His Father had signed him over for this. His own son. Hands grabbed him, and he screamed again, thinking the wraiths were going to drain him. They’d go after Riley next, and Eren couldn’t save him.

“It’s just me!”

Riley’s arms encased him as a particularly savage burst of pain made Eren arch his back. As swiftly as it came, it was all gone, and he went limp in the halfling’s embrace. Riley said nothing for several moments as Eren heavily breathed against his chest, afraid it would come again. Grandfather never did such a short feeding.

“Does your head hurt?”

“Dream,” Eren managed to get out. Riley had him, but he couldn’t protect him.
