Ian tapped on the office door. When the wood gave beneath his knuckles, he eased the door open and spotted Sara on the floor. She turned to look up at him and those red-rimmed eyes and tear tracks down her cheeks had him bursting in and immediately at her side.

“What’s wrong? What happened?” he demanded.

He sank to his knees and glanced to her phone. She’d been looking at images of a family he didn’t recognize, but he wanted to know what the hell happened from her taking a call almost an hour ago, until now when she’d clearly been having an emotional moment on the floor.

“Oh, my word.” Her damp eyes widened as she shoved her cell back into her sweater pocket. “I forgot all about you.”

“Well, that never helps a man’s ego,” he joked, hoping to lighten the mood. Ian shifted to sit more comfortably at her side on the rug. “Is everything all right? Did you get bad news?”

Sara shook her head. “I got amazing news, but I just don’t know how to process everything. And I was so wrapped up in everything, I lost track of time and touch with reality. I’m so sorry, Ian.”

Relief settled inside him. “Don’t be sorry. I started to worry when you didn’t come back and then when I saw you on the floor crying... Damn it. Don’t scare me like that.”

Sara patted the side of his face, her fingertips brushing his scar.

“See? You do care and aren’t so coldhearted.”

That touch, so simple and playful, yet so arousing, struck a nerve he’d thought for sure he’d severed.

Ian reached up and grabbed her hand, curling his fingers around her delicate ones. Sara’s eyes widened, and her mouth dropped open as she continued to stare at him.

“Is that how you see me?” he asked. “Cold?”

“I—Well. No.”

Damn right he wasn’t cold. He was so hot right now, he should have waited in his vehicle like he suggested hours ago, but here he was alone and on the floor with Sara...the woman who wouldn’t get out of his mind. Even when he was alone, she was there, always in the forefront and demanding his attention.

“Are you going to kiss me?” she whispered, her gaze dropping to his lips.

“Is that what you want, Sara? You want me to kiss you? To make you remember the other night?”

She inched closer. “I want you to make the other night happen again.”

Hell. There was no way he could deny her...or himself. They’d danced around this moment since they reunited in her office. But she was vulnerable. Whatever happened with that phone call had taken her to a new place and he didn’t want to be a regret.

Ian pulled her hand away from his face and tugged her closer until she fell against his chest. He searched her eyes for any sign of doubt, but only saw desire.

“Are you using me to forget your trouble?” he asked.

“Maybe. Is that a problem?”

Not a problem, but he was surprised that there was a sliver of disappointment.
