It was oh, so tempting to accept his offer.

But it would mean letting someone else rescue her.

With money that hadn’t been obtained honestly, in her view. Plus she wouldn’t be setting up a charity. It wouldn’t be honest. And honesty was important, especially after what had happened to her. Her integrity wasn’t for sale.

At the same time, she was relieved that Josh didn’t seem to think any less of her now he finally knew the truth about the huge mistake she’d made.

And it seemed that he, too, was at a point where his life had to change.

Maybe they could help each other.

Though she had the feeling that he was holding something back. He’d been very cagey about his previous job. Or maybe he’d worked in financial services and didn’t want to tell her, given the way she’d lost all her own assets.

By mutual unspoken consent they didn’t talk any more about their jobs or their past. Sophie enjoyed working with him in the kitchen, getting him to try different flavours and textures.

‘I’ve got a teaching session in half an hour,’ Josh said when he’d finished doing the washing up, ‘so I really need to go. But I’ll pick you up for dinner at half-past six.’

‘What’s the dress code?’ she asked.

‘Smart,’ he said.

She was glad that Hannah had persuaded her to pack a little black dress. But there was one teensy problem. ‘I’m not sure I’ll manage heels in the snow,’ she said.

‘Wear your snow boots outside, and whatever you like inside,’ he said. ‘Bring a bag for your boots. I’ll carry it for you.’

‘All right. Half-past six it is,’ she said.

He kissed her on the cheek, and it felt as if little fires were dancing underneath her skin. ‘See you later.’

‘Have a good lesson,’ she said.

Kitty came back from the slopes and fell on the goodies Sophie had made. ‘These are so good,’ she said.

‘Thanks. I thought I’d start doing a couple of Christmas-based afternoon tea things each week for our guests,’ Sophie said.

‘Great idea.’ Kitty smiled at her. ‘So what are you up to, this evening?’

‘I’m going out for dinner.’

‘With Mr Sexy Ski Instructor?’

‘He’s just a friend,’ Sophie reminded her.

‘If you say so,’ Kitty said with a grin. ‘What are you wearing?’

‘A dress.’

‘Show me.’

Sophie did so, and Kitty nodded her approval. ‘What about jewellery?’

‘I don’t really wear much,’ Sophie said. ‘Just my mum’s rings.’

‘You need jewellery with that dress. Pearls would be good. Come with me,’ Kitty said, and ushered Sophie into her room. ‘Put the dress on.’ She rummaged in her jewellery box. ‘Right. Borrow these.’ She handed Sophie a choker of creamy pearls. ‘And I think you should wear your hair up.’

‘I don’t—’ Sophie began.

‘You do tonight. I’ll do your hair and make-up.’ Kitty grinned. ‘I’ve already worked out that you don’t wear much, so don’t worry; I’m not going to make you look orange or put huge false eyelashes on you. Just a bit of foundation, mascara and lippy.’

At twenty-five past six, Sophie barely recognised herself in the mirror.
