Chapter 7

Apparently, he really is good at interior decorating, because wow, the apartment looks like a picture perfect Christmas movie.

“A little higher,” he tells Brie from where she stands on the ladder. He’d insisted that he could do it, knowing that she’s intimidated by heights, but she told him she’s never been good about judging where things should go.

Unless they’re books. When it comes to books, she’s golden.

“Like this?” She pins the wreath above the central window, an inch higher than before. Caleb’s secretly terrified she’ll fall, even though she’s just a few feet off the ground, but she seems steady on her feet for someone uncomfortable with heights.

“Perfect,” he tells her because it is, and also if she doesn’t start coming down from the ladder right now he’s going to have a heart attack.

She smiles and goes to climb down when she freezes. “Oh,” she gulps.

Immediately, Caleb’s at her side. “Careful,” he tells her. “Take your time. I’ve got you.”

He holds the ladder steady as she starts inching her way down, and as soon as she’s safely near him he can’t resist but scoop her off of it, holding her against him. Caleb can’t believe how intoxicated he is by her, listening to her squeals of laughter. He can’t get enough.

“It looks beautiful,” he tells her, kissing her on the cheek. “Nice job.”

“Nice job to you, too,” Brie says, grinning up at him as he reluctantly sets her to her feet. “I’m good at hanging, you’re good at designating. We’re a good team.”

She holds out her hand, and, amused, he gives her the high-five she’s waiting for.

“Now the tree,” she sings, practically bouncing. Christmas music that she’d set up on his Bluetooth speakers trill through the room as she opens a box of ornaments. “This we can both do together.”

The tree was set up by him as she placed other decor on the fake fireplace, so all they need to do is hang the ornaments and they’re through. He wraps ribbon around before she starts hanging things up. It’s funny, doing these things when he’s an adult. He never even got to do it as a kid; there was always hired help who did it for the annual Christmas party. It was never a quiet, private event like this, something cozy and intimate. Then again, cozy and intimate have never been words to describe his family, unless that’s how his parents are with their not-so-secret lovers.

As soon as he’s done fixing the ribbon, Brie begins hanging little red and gold round ornaments on the limbs. Caleb immediately starts scooping some up out of the box to help her, secretly adjusting a few that she’d hung up if they aren’t in the right spot. When he glances at her, he notices her biting back a smile, so perhaps it’s not done as secretly as he intended.

“Winter Wonderland” starts playing on the speakers, and immediately Brie begins singing along. Like before, it’s off-key, but not enough to be grating. It’s more amusing than anything else.
