CHAPTER NINE

“ARARA!” GROR’S VOICE sounded like it came from inside a cave, distorted and hollow.

Arara heard snarling and growling. The sky tumbled about overhead, then the ground, sky again. From somewhere far away she heard Filia shouting.

Water hit her face and someone’s paw grabbed at her muzzle, trying to force it apart. Arara growled and clamped down.

“Stop, stop!” Filia said. “Let me try to talk to her first, at least.” A paw stroked her head and Arara yelped around the fur in her mouth. “Arara, let go. Open your mouth, let go. The fight is over. You need to go see the healer.”

Over. Healer. The words bounced around in her head for a moment before she processed them.

She relaxed and soft fingers pried her mouth open. Her jaw ached. More fingers pulled open one eyelid, letting in the traitorous sun to stab at her eyes. She cried out and the fingers let go.

Warmth radiated up her side, easing the ache in her jaw and calming the migraine down to a dull pounding.

She blinked her eyes open. She lay cradled in Filia’s arms with a Kin’s hands on her side. The Kin from the other day stood over her, brows furrowed.

“She’s not hurt.” The Kin spoke to Filia. “But I can feel her pain. It’s odd. I managed to lessen it, at least, but I’m not sure what’s wrong.”

Arara sat up and pushed away the Kin’s soft hands. Her skin was cool to the touch and it made Arara’s fur crawl. She looked up at Filia, trying to ignore the Kin. “How did Kerka take losing?” Arara managed a shaky grin just wishing she’d been aware enough to see Kerka’s face and hear his thoughts about losing a fight to the two class misfits.

“Kerka didn’t lose, you did.” Filia scolded.

“What?” That couldn’t be right.

“Yes, you managed to bite him, but that was it. You were hanging off Kerka’s side, nearly unconscious. Gror tried to come to your rescue, but with Kerka’s long reach, he couldn’t even get close-”

“You were right to stop it.” The Kin’s voice sounded like rustling leaves. “I was watching from my tree-house.” The Kin pointed to somewhere behind Filia. Arara twisted around in Filia’s arms and stifled a groan. Half the adults in the village were milling around the square with the puppies.

“But, but, I got him.” Arara sputtered.

“Yes, you got first blood.” Filia conceded. “But you abandoned your partner and left yourself open. Why did you just hang on like that?”

“My head hurt.”

“From Kerka hitting you in the head; yes, I’m not surprised.” Filia sighed.

“No.” The Kin spoke up. “I felt something strange when I was healing the pup. The pain wasn’t coming from the side where he hit her it seemed to be radiating outward from the middle of her head.” She shook out the wide sleeves of her silk robe and lifted her head, looking Arara in the eyes. “In fact she interrupted me before I was finished. May I? You are still in pain and I can help.
