Chapter Six

Nose to the ground, Seth moved up and down the main road, sniffing for any trace of Snow. Each time he caught a whiff his heartbeat accelerated, only to slow seconds later as he lost it in the greasy road smell of tires and exhaust.

“It’s getting dark. We should get home.” Nick started to re-trace their steps back to the house. His shoulders drooped as he waited for Seth to catch up. “Come on man, I can’t leave you out here. If that nosy neighbor comes by and decides you’re a wild wolf she’ll call the cops, or shoot you.”

Seth choked down the howl threatening to rise to the surface. He didn’t want to give up. Ever. Snow needed him. She couldn’t be gone.

He kept working, going over the cold ground again, searching for something, anything, that would lead him to Snow.

“Seth...” Nick shook his head. “It’s getting dark. We’ve been out here for over an hour and you can’t track her. She hitched a ride, she’s gone.” His cousin turned, walking through the dusk and heading for home.

Seth whined. He gave in and trailed after Nick, his tail drooping low. He’d lost her. Right when he’d started to figure out what he’d found. He caught up to Nick as he turned into the driveway.

“Sorry man, life sucks.”

Seth moved into a trot, passing Nick and taking a side trail.

“Hey, where are you going?”

He wasn’t going back to the cabin, not yet. He’d run until he dropped but he couldn’t face going back to a house full of his relatives, who’d say ‘I told you so’. Or worse, wouldn’t say anything.

He headed back up the mountain to the spot where he’d howled out his frustration the night before. Only now it was worse. Now he felt like he had a fist shoved into his chest, squeezing his heart. Now he suspected he might have lost something he could only find once in his life. His true mate. A human.

Ron finished off his second glass of whiskey and eyed the decanter. If Elena stayed on the phone for a few more minutes he could sneak in another full glass. If he was careful she wouldn’t notice that he’d had more than two.

“Yes, Hans, I have her here,” she said into the phone. “She’s not going anywhere. Poor dear, she’s stoned out of her mind.” Elena laughed. “But I’m almost out of the drug. I need some more so we can get her home. And I think it will look better if you come out here and get her.” She crossed the room, turning her back on him as she continued to plot with Snow’s rehab doctor.

Ron stood up and ambled over to the whiskey, hiding his lowball so she couldn’t see that it was empty.

“No, I think you should come out,” Elena repeated. “I’ve already told people you’re on your way, how would it look now if you didn’t show?”

He blocked her view of the decanter and poured two, then three fingers worth.
