Chapter 10

When I wake up, I'm practically floating on air. Jeremy and I get dressed and eat a quick breakfast of muffins so we can get downstairs and get to work.

The sunlight filters through the windows, casting a golden glow over the room, and I can't help but steal glances at Jeremy as he continues to work on the shop's renovations. He looks so focused, so skilled, and oh-so-handsome.

A contented sigh escapes me as I hand him a screwdriver, but then a tiny prick of doubt pierces my bubble of happiness. Is he really as perfect as he seems? Is it genuine, this connection we have? I remember putting Ryder on a pedestal, only to have it crumble beneath my feet.

Shaking off the unpleasant thought, I force a smile and keep myself busy being Jeremy's cheerleader.

"So," I say, trying to sound casual as I pass him a wrench, "that one time, you mentioned thinking your old pack was cursed. What did you mean by that?"

I watch his face for any hint of reaction, curiosity bubbling inside me. It's a mystery that seems to be calling to me, just like everything else about Jeremy. But this time, I want to be sure, to really know him. And perhaps, in understanding his past, I can put to rest the nagging doubts about our future.

Jeremy's eyes take on a distant look as he begins to talk about his previous pack. The wrench in his hand stills, and his voice turns somber. "I'm a Grayfang now, but I was a Smokefur. I don't know how to say it, so I'll just be blunt: some of them weren't good, Athena, especially the leaders. There were good people who tried to step up and make a difference, but they failed."

"You were one of the ones who tried to step up?" I ask, a flicker of hope lighting up in my chest.

He looks guilty for a split second before nodding. "I was, but I didn't do as much as I should have."

The room grows quiet as I absorb his words, the weight of his past settling between us. "How did the curse break?" I finally ask, the words catching in my throat.

Jeremy's face tightens, and his voice drops to a whisper. "We burned it all down and started over."

I blink, my mind reeling from his revelation. Burned it down? That's about the worst answer I could think of. A shiver runs down my spine at the thought of having to do the same to break my shop's curse. It's unthinkable.

He must sense my distress because he quickly adds, "I'm not even sure it completely broke the curse. The survivors are fine, but the few times I've stepped foot back on Smokefur land, it still feels off. Haunted maybe." His eyes meet mine, filled with sincerity. "But now I live on Grayfang territory, and while there's some adjustment, it's going fine. They're good people."

I note the determination in his voice, the underlying importance of me knowing that, and a warm feeling spreads through me.
