I woke up to the feeling that I’d been under assault by a very annoying honeybee. The reason for it quickly resolved itself when I checked my phone and saw two dozen texts and almost half that number of missed calls.

The unavoidable sinking in my stomach at that had me wide awake even before I pushed up onto the pillows. It didn’t help that most of the messages were from my parents. The memory of Dad’s face, drawn and pale after chemo flashed through my mind and I had to swallow hard and take a few deep breaths before I could even clear my mind to pick my phone up.

Figuring it would be faster to just call, hands shaking, I dialed my mom’s number and it had barely started ringing before she answered, voice breathy and panicked. “Quinn, baby, are you okay?”

“You and Dad are fine?” I asked at the same time. It seemed a safe bet given she had launched in asking about me, but better to know for sure. I needed to hear her say it. Especially after all those calls scaring the crap out of me.

“Yes, we’re fine. The infection seems to be contained to just New York City.”

“Wait… infection? What are you talking about?”

“You don’t know?”

It felt like I’d missed a step going down the stairs. “Mom, I literally just woke up now. What are you talking about?”

“What were you doing yesterday?”

“Uh.. working. All day. We’ve got an important deposition next week, so…”

“At home? Tell me you were working at home and didn’t go out at all.”

“Yeah, I was at home all day and didn’t leave.”

I heard her exhale as if I’d just said the most important thing she’d ever heard. “Good. Don’t go out at all. For any reason. Or order anything in, at least until things have been figured out a little more. Okay, baby?”

“Mom, I’m really confused.”

“Well, there isn’t too much clear news yet anyway,” she started, “but apparently someone arrived in your city yesterday with a really infectious and dangerous virus. It’s already become a major outbreak thanks to the subways and now the hospitals are filling up. The news says the city is being locked down to try to minimize the spread and keep it from going to other cities while medical officials figure out what’s going on and what can be done to stop it.”

“Wow.” I glanced out the window and found a bored pigeon looking in at me. Now that I was paying attention, there was less background noise than I was used to.

“Well,” I said at last, “thanks for telling me. I just ordered in groceries a couple of days ago so I should be okay for a while. I’ll call into the office and see what we’re supposed to do. I’m sure the bosses won’t want to put us at risk and a lot of what we’re doing right now can be done remotely. It won’t be as easy, but if it’s life or death…”

“It is,” Mom interrupted, which made a shiver run up my spine.
