MALACHI

“You are coming to the Gala, Chi?”

“I told you I would, Mother. Don’t I come every year?”

She pursed her lips and admitted that I did but that I always left early. I shrugged and grabbed another one of her oatmeal cookies, and in one bite it disappeared. The way I ate, you’d think I would be round, but like my father, I was able to stay in shape, but apparently that wasn’t enough. Stress trumped everything as he found out.

“I want you to stick around a little longer this time.”

I wonder if my mother was the source of any of his stress. She did not give up when she wanted something.

“Why, so you can hook me up with a Senator’s daughter or maybe one of a Supreme Court Judge.”

“Would that be so bad?”

“It would be terrible. When are you going to realize those women are not for me—hmmm?”

“And who is for you, Chi? Who?”

My mind went to the memory of Sarai riding me hard and fast, her hips jerking her ass up and down on my dick like a jockey. The sound of a thunderclap beat throughout my room with every hard thrust we worked against each other. She was my perfect bed partner. But nothing more. You’re a liar. You already know you want more. Much more.

“I have my hands full with the firm. I don’t have time for marriage. You and I both know the long hours I have to put in to keep up my caseload and manage the firm will not make me a great husband.”

My mother looked me over and went to grab one of those dainty tea mugs and poured liquid from a small teapot sitting on the counter in front of us.

“Come sit.”

I couldn’t be sure what irritated me more. That she ordered me to take a seat when I was perfectly content and ready to leave her, or her confidence that I would follow her as she took a seat.

Inwardly I sighed. Questions were coming. Questions I had no answers to or didn’t want to give—one or the other—but she’d ask them anyway and I’d have to maneuver around them out of respect.

“Are you happy, Chi?” she asked me after we were seated at the breakfast table by the window overlooking her garden.

“I think so. What, are you going to tell me I’m not?”

“No, when have I ever tried to run your life in that way? That of you or your brothers and sister?”

I lifted my eyebrows but withheld comment. Most people’s blind spot was themselves.

“Okay, anyway, I was just curious because you’re my eldest baby and I don’t want you lonely.”

“I’m far from lonely. My life is good, Mother.”

“I’m not talking about the women you sleep with or even the one you brought ho—I mean, any women you spend time with. I’m talking about someone serious.”

I watched her hurry to take a gulp, this time, of her tea and her eyes drifted to her rose bushes. Uh huh, Joann told her about Sarai in the house.
