George ordered another pint and returned to his seat. Ralph had just gone, leaving behind more than two hours of recorded material, a package of images and data, and a world-weary journo shocked for the first time in decades. He had done more than his fair share of investigative journalism over the years, some impressive scoops too, but nothing like this. This was hold-the-front-page stuff and then some. Hell, this had Pulitzer written all over it. Or would have if he were a Yank. What was worse was that Ralph insisted on simultaneous publication in the US, so he would need to bring Ned Lorenzo at The New York Times on board. He would be the lucky bastard that picked up the Pulitzer. He â George â would have to make do with Reporter of the Year at the Brit Press Awards. He winced inwardly. It just didnât have the same ring.
He took another sip of his drink. He needed a while to compose himself and plan the next move. Her indoors â as he increasingly thought of hard-nosed, hard-partying new editor, Miranda Blenkinsop â would be in the driving seat, of course. But he was in no doubt that there was too much material for one edition. He guessed she would clear the decks for two or three days. That would give time for the story to build nicely and for them to get the dirt from the university boffins who now had samples of the bot broth. He looked at his watch, took a last swig of his pint, stuffed the package and the folded-up Racing Times in his jacket pocket, and headed for the door, all thought of an impending and sleepy retirement down under long gone.
