Chapter Seven

Skye awoke in her bed at dawn, clutching the eagle feather to her chest, her face stiff with dried tears. What had happened? Was it all just a bad dream? But it seemed so vivid; so real that she could almost reach out and touch the remnants of the torn and ripped tipis she had seen. Her heart felt like it was broken in two and tears gathered in her eyes again as she thought of the horrible conditions her people had had to survive. Pushing off the covers, she got out of bed and found that she was wearing her oversized T-shirt. Her knees felt sore and she stooped to rub them. Little bits of dirt and gravel came away and bounced onto the carpet. “What?” Skye said aloud as she sank back onto the bed. So it wasn’t a dream?

A loud banging sounded on her bedroom door and Skye jumped. “Mom says it’s time to get up,” Cheyenne yelled.

“Okay, okay,” Skye called back, trying to clear her head.

“She said to hurry or you’ll be late. She doesn’t want you to miss the bus.”

“Okay,” Skye mumbled again. “I’m coming.” Pushing her thoughts away, she rehung the eagle feather in its place on the bulletin board and went to get dressed. She had a lot to think about.
