SIREN’S CALL

CHAPTER 9

“And it’s because of your kind that the land has been stripped of its natural resources and my people have been caged onto reservations and forced into poverty,” Naomi Cardinal argued fiercely.

Sitting stoically next her on the living room couch, Tom slowly turned to narrow a lethal stare at her.

“My kind?”

“Yes, your kind,” she shot back.

“Lady, you have no clue as to what my kind can really do to yours. And I’m five seconds from showing you.”

“Oh, big, powerful white man. I’m so scared.”

“You should be,” he stated low and deadly.

“Oh, dear,” Katrina murmured quietly, watching their exchange from the kitchen.

“Sorry about my militant cousin,” Jon whispered from behind. “She can be overzealous in her flavor of the month political causes. Poor Tom just caught in her crosshairs today.”

“It’s not Tom I’m worried about.” Katrina winced at them as she covered the stew pot simmering on the stove. “Maybe this was a bad idea. I just hoped that if he got to know you better outside the office, he would loosen up a little when I’m out with you on field assignments.”

“Well, my cousin isn’t helping your case,” he admitted. “It was a mistake to bring her. Again, I’m sorry.”

Katrina turned to face him. “No, I’m glad I have the chance to meet some of your family. I would really like to meet the others someday. The entire community, in fact. They sound so interesting and colorful.”

“Well, they’re something anyhow,” he said chuckling. “Let’s just see if we can get through one meal without our respective cousins tearing each other apart.”

Katrina moaned, grimacing as she covertly watched Tom’s and Naomi’s heated exchange. “Deal. Oh, I’m warning you now that I’m a terrible cook. I probably should have just ordered takeout.”

“No, I’m sure what you’re making will be great,” Jon said.

“Liar. But okay, I’ll take the compliment now before you eat it.”

Katrina noticed the worried look on Jon’s face for the third time that evening, and she knew that it had nothing to do with their battling bots out in the living room.

“What’s going on?” she asked quietly, touching his arm as he leaned against the counter. “You haven’t been yourself the past two days.”

Jon offered a cheerless smile, then finally shook his head, saying, “Don’t tell anyone, but the recent polls show us trailing Candace Lininger by a widening margin. They dropped ten percent more from last week even.”

“I’m so sorry,” she said. “But there are still over two months left in the campaign. We all just have to buckle down and work harder to get your message out.”

“I don’t know how much harder everyone can work.” He let go of a tired breath, then cracked a smile at her. “Anyhow, I’m not conceding just yet. Just a bit depressed about the latest reports. Sorry if I’m putting a damper on your dinner tonight.”

“Not at all. We’re all a team here. What concerns you, concerns me.”

He nodded. “I’m glad you’re with us, Katrina. No matter what happens in the end, it’s been a real pleasure working with you.
