“A wizard gave it to me,” Wiglaf answered.

“Zelnoc?” asked the bat.

“Why, yes,” Wiglaf replied. “He gave it to me as a promise that he would return and—” He had a sudden thought. “Say, are you...”

“Zelnoc’s grandpappy,” the bat said. “That’s me. I was a wizard once. Zamster the Amazing. Now I’m Morgana’s watch bat.” He sighed again. “I’m supposed to keep party crashers away.”

“Will you let us pass?” Erica asked the bat. “For we are on a quest to save Sir Lancelot!”

“No one’s been able to save him so far,” the bat said. “But go ahead. Have a try. The party’s about to begin. Morgana might not notice a few extra guests. On the other hand, you never know.”

Wiglaf did not like the sound of that. But he followed Erica as she stepped between two blue-flame torches.

“Don’t get caught!” the bat called after them. “Morgana will clip my wings if she finds out I’ve helped you.”

The questers hurried through the forest. At last they saw a light far away. They stopped. Erica took Wiglaf’s hand. Wiglaf took Angus’s hand. Angus held Rufus’s rope. Erica put out her torch. Black night covered them.

“May good win over evil!” Angus whispered in a shaky voice. Then together they made their way toward the faraway light.

At last Morgana’s palace came into view. It was made of black stone, so it was not easy to see in the dark. A single torch lit the entry.

The questers ducked down behind some bushes and peeked out.

Wiglaf barely made out a weedy garden dotted with dozens of small statues. Beyond it people were lined up outside the palace door.

Well, people was not exactly the word.

“It’s a costume party, right?” Angus asked.

“I don’t think so,” Erica answered.

Wiglaf didn’t think so either. He saw a sorceress chatting with a warlock. Giants, gnomes, and trolls were grumbling together. At the end of the line stood a grave robber. He looked as if he’d come to the party straight from work.

Wiglaf felt a tap on his shoulder. He whirled around. Two men stood behind him.

“Sorry to bother you,” one of them said. “We’re the delivery peasants from Squat & Gobble Caterers. You know where we’re supposed to take the brew?” He motioned to a cart loaded with wooden barrels.

Wiglaf pointed to the palace.

“Ha! Plain as the nose on my face,” said the second peasant. He whistled. “Looks like Morgana’s having herself quite a wingding.”

“I hear she has a guest of honor tonight,” said the first peasant.

“Who’s that?” asked Erica.

The first peasant laughed. “Why, it’s Sir Lancelot!”
