Chapter 16

“Good morning, Fiona. I’m so glad to see you today.”

The hopeful tone in Joel Macroe’s voice had her smiling, but not so much that he would consider it an invitation. It was a fine balance Fiona walked whenever she met up with him, which was why meetups like these were only instigated when she really needed something. Now was one of those times, obviously, as she didn’t have anyone else to turn to.

“Good morning, Joel. I’m hoping you called because you have some good news.”

“As a matter of fact, I do. Here you go.”

A package was placed on the glass counter and pushed towards her, enough to make her heart leap in excitement. She carefully opened it and took out the ear pod, which now looked very different from when she’d handed it to him just yesterday.

Casually, she turned it on, then placed it on her finger. The ring looked like a fancy piece of jewelry, but nothing too expensive.

“So have you enabled the feature I asked you to?” she asked softly. He nodded eagerly.

“Yes. You were right; it’s a complicated device. I tried to check the speaking functions…and no, don’t worry, I didn’t focus on it too much. Anyway, it’s a wall of codes, and only a very high-level tech can crack it. But I did activate the tracker. What would your boss need the tracker for?”

The question was innocent, so she shrugged. “He often gets carried away on missions, running after the bad guys for a while, then getting lost. Sometimes he sticks it on the bad guys so he can trail after them. You can see why we don’t need bad guys listening in to our private conversations.”

Joel nodded, fascinated. “That’s right.”

“How about the other functions and instructions I gave? Have you had trouble with them?”

His chest puffed out. “Of course not. I followed all your instructions to a T. Your boss will be pleased with the results.”

“Thank you so much. Is there anything I can do in return?”

The words, while innocent enough, seemed to make the man blush, then fumble about. Finally, he shook his head. “No need for anything. It’s a return favor.”

Fiona beamed. “And I really appreciate it. Thank you.”

She got out of there without needing more, which was good as guilt was already pressing her down at her great deception. But it had been instinct that had dictated for her to do this, telling her she needed it done before she proceeded with the next step: return home, where she had no idea what she would find.

Also, no idea if they would find out the truth in her: that she had a change of heart regarding her outlook on life, and it was going to affect how she dealt with things from now on.

Fiona kept the ring on as she hurried from Joel’s street and back to hers, which led her directly in the district she’d been avoiding from the get-go: Upper West Side, which hosted most of the city’s cultural sites.
