Chapter 17

Trinity was taking Spirit back to LAX to catch her one o’clock flight heading back to Chicago. The two of them had had a blast at Xavier’s party last night, and Spirit was so glad her sistah was one step closer to getting this reality show she was pitching picked-up. Spirit still couldn’t believe Trinity had masterminded such a wonderful scenario and hadn’t told her anything about it. She knew Trinity’s major in college was broadcasting and acting, and in her senior year, she’d switched over fully to become a drama major, where she’d quickly become head of the school’s plays.

Trinity was good at acting and had instantly become a regular Tyler Perry when it came to presenting the plays in the school’s auditorium. Trinity wasn’t a Mariah Carey, but she could carry a pretty good tune, so that had helped her with her mild success. But Spirit had thought, once Trinity had married, she’d given that crazy dream up of becoming the next Madea.

“Hey! What was all that about between you and Xavier last night?” Trinity asked, now that she wasn’t as tipsy as she was last night after George Tilman Jr. said he wanted to go over her script with her.

“What do you mean?” Spirit asked, knowing exactly what Trinity was getting at. “Xavier seems like a nice man,” she replied, looking out the window at the fast-paced traffic speeding past them.

“Girl, I saw the way he was looking at you. I mean, Paula, Nia, and Taraji were all up in this nigga’s grill, and he made it obvious he was only interested in you,” Trinity replied.

“Trin, don’t you think you’re over-exaggerating a tad bit? I’m sure those women are more his speed than me—the little married back doctor—and besides, we both know I’m very married and I love my husband very much!” Spirit exclaimed coyly.

“I’m sure you do love that crazy-ass nigga, but the question is, does he love you? That’s what remains to be seen at the end of the day. I done told your little butt about the scent of shit, so don’t go back to Chicago acting like you didn’t get your nose game up. You smell it once and it smells like shit, you know what to do,” Trinity said, laughing as she exited at the airport exit.

“No, I don’t know what to do. Tell me again,” Spirit laughed.

“You wipe that shit and flush it down the toilet, girl. I’m not playing with you, Spirit. Don’t take no man’s mess, you hear me? A little old lady who use to come in the shop once told me love is just another four-letter word, equivalent to fuck and shit, so fuck that shit! As you can see, my sister, you’re still a catch; your ass had Xavier Cross’ nose wide open, like a fat kid in Willie Wonka’s factory,” Trinity said seriously.

Trinity walked Spirit to the Delta security gates, as far as she could go without a boarding pass. She was carrying a little brown Coach bag and Spirit was wondering why she was toting a bag that size.
