CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

RUTHLESS

“Word on the street is that Lauren Archer is recruiting. She’s taking anyone who wants to join her syndicate. Do you know anything about that?”

I glanced up at the mirror across from me, meeting Joe’s inquisitive stare through the glass. “Wouldn’t surprise me if she’s willing to take anyone. She’s desperate.”

“Uh huh. I suppose anyone would be in her position. You don’t seem concerned.” Joe had a tendency to talk too much and ask too many questions. Unfortunately, he was the best barber around.

“Why should I be concerned?” I asked, wary of those seated in other chairs around the barbershop. Anyone here could be an Archer spy. “She’ll go down fighting, but she’ll still go down.”

I wasn’t cocky, merely confident. More blood would be shed. Lives would be lost. But I didn’t doubt for a second that we would come out on top.

Joe shrugged and reached for the clippers. “Of course you wouldn’t be concerned. I just thought she may recruit some real crazies. No telling what might happen. I’m sure you and your boys know what you’re doing.”

I’d like to think that we did. Although it wasn’t just the boys. We had Maven leading the charge. Thinking about her made me think about the look on her face when I refused to talk to her. I was being a fucking asshole. I knew that. The alternative was spilling my guts to the woman responsible for the mess inside my head. Not happening.

“That we do,” I said, saying no more than necessary.

Joe was fishing for info. We all knew that’s what he did. The nosey bastard would turn around and sell it to the first person with the right dollar amount. I watched him in the mirror as he busied himself shaving down the sides of my short mohawk. I popped in here every two or three weeks, partly for the haircut and partly for the gossip.

When Joe finished with my hair, I followed him to the front desk to pay. I caught a man in the waiting area sneaking glances in my direction. I openly looked him over, making no attempt to hide my searching stare. He wore a jacket over his shirt, covering any arm tattoos he may have. He averted his gaze, staring at his phone instead.

“Have a good one, Ruthless. Stay out of trouble.” Joe said the same damn thing at the end of every visit.

I tipped him a twenty and nodded as I strolled out the door. Something about the man in the waiting area left me unsettled. Before I could consider my options, a blacked out limo pulled up beside me.

The window rolled down, revealing Lauren Archer and several of her goons. I started to reach for my gun, expecting her to shoot me where I stood.

She held up both hands to show she was unarmed. “I just want to talk. I promise. Let me buy you lunch.”

I gawked at her, confused by this sudden turn of events. Her timing had been too perfect.
