“You said something to them, didn’t you?” I asked as I made sure the ice maker was full.

“Yes.” Luke looked over from where he was stacking plates to take outside. “But, before you get mad, I didn’t bring it up.”

I started pulling glasses out of the cabinet. “So what happened?”

“They were worried that because you’re rich, that you won’t be happy here, and that you’ll either leave me, or that you’ll entice me into moving to New York.”

“It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that you’d never move to New York.”

“Don’t say never. I’d obviously bring the kids with me.”

“Don’t tell them that. If they thought I’m here to take their grandkids and niece and nephew away from them, I’ll be a monster.” I laid the wine opener out on the countertop. “And besides, I’m not rich.”

“You may not be in the top one percent, but for Pine River, you absolutely are rich”

“I am not.”

“Look around.” He waved his hands to indicate my house. “You’re renting the nicest house in Pine River.” He laid his hand on my countertop. “Most people here wouldn’t know a granite or marble countertop if it hit them. There are rich families in Fayetteville and Bentonville, but out here, there aren’t. People notice that your clothes are a little nicer, and your car is more expensive.”

“I rented this car. It’s not even mine.”

“Victoria. It’s a BMW.”

Point taken.

I exhaled. This discussion was getting old. We’d tried hanging out with Luke’s family again. The second time was just as much of a disaster as the first. His mother and sister were polite but standoffish. His sister-in-law was nosy and asked how much money I made.

I’d thought they saw me as invading their home turf. So I suggested a party at my place. They could see that I was renting a house, and that I was trying to be a part of the town.

And I needed a distraction.

I hadn’t solved the issue with the hacker. I hadn’t told my systems admin yet either. A few internet searches had revealed that I was dealing with a seasoned criminal.

So I’d invited Luke, his kids, his parents and his sister. We have to entertain the extended family after I’d won this crew over. Which was looking unlikely.

As Luke helpfully pointed out, I’d rented a BMW when I first got to town. I didn’t drive much in the city, and the car had appealed to me at the rental place.

When Luke’s brother-in-law arrived, he’d been friendly, but he’d never made it inside the house. He’d asked to see the BMW’s engine. I gave him the keys and left him to it.

His mother ignored me, choosing to stay outside and play with the kids in the creek. His father said a brief hello, but then never spoke another word to me, even though I was in and out of the house, bringing food to the deck where Luke and his dad were grilling the food.

“Where’s all your food,” his sister asked. I looked over to see her standing in my kitchen with two of the cabinet doors open.
