After calling Dr. Wilkes to check I was okay not to come in, I went straight to bed. Sleep was impossible. My thin sheets twisted around me as I flopped this way and that, desperate to drift away to the Land of Nod where I could forget about demons and massive black wings and guitarists trapped in dungeon cells. I’d thought about calling the cops on him again, but it was clear he had the NYPD in his pocket. Hell, maybe the police were demons themselves. At this point, anything was possible.

My morning alarm blared just as I’d finally relaxed. Groaning, I threw back the covers and padded into the bathroom, showered, and got dressed for the day. When I caught sight of myself in the mirror, I stared. My eyes were shot through with red and my cheeks were as pale as…well, a vampire’s.

Ugh. Vampires were real. Probably. I would never hear the end of this from Anya. The smirk. The knowing glint in her eye. Told you so.

After grabbing a jacket and my bag, I took the subway uptown to the Metro News office. Every step I took brought me closer and closer to Charlie and confessing that he’d been right all along. I didn’t know why I felt so nervous about it. My unease was like a boulder in my gut, heavy and unmoving.

I’d been too freaked out, too worked up to even think about it. Had he been sitting here all night waiting to hear from me? Worried out of his mind?

When he glanced up at me, his eyes cleared and he smiled. “Eva. Good morning. How did last night go?”

Okay, clearly not worried. Just tired from another all-nighter. Typical Charlie.

“Um, well.” I blew out a breath. “You’re probably not going to believe what I found out.”

A slow smile spread across his face. Oh, who was I kidding? This was Charlie. He was all into that supernatural shit, much to my annoyance. This whole thing was right up his alley.

“Try me.” His chair creaked as he folded his arms and leaned back.

And so I told him everything. What I’d seen, what I’d heard, and what Caim had told me. I stumbled over the word ‘demon’ but Charlie didn’t even bat an eye. In fact, he didn’t even blink. As if nothing about my story surprised him in the least.

“So, he let me go and I went home.” I sagged against the door and closed my eyes. “He told me not to tell anyone about what happened, but…”

“But he’s a demon,” Charlie said.

“Yeah, and you don’t seem surprised about that,” I pointed out.

He shrugged. “I had my
