Chapter Fifteen

Seriously, how did her baby get out there? Alyssa reached for the door, but it slid open on its own. What the… She jumped back as Vixen raced past her, bringing cold air and Devin Jordan in with her. Alyssa slowly backed away.

Devin walked into the room and closed the door behind him. He looked tired. The black T-shirt he wore was ruffled as if he’d slept in it. His hair looked unkempt, a look she’d never seen on him before. Her body tingled at the sight of him.

Every step she took backward equaled a step forward by him. Heart racing, Alyssa continued to retreat until the back of her legs came in contact with the hotel bed. She fell back onto the bed, but kept a firm grip on her towel.

She stared up into Devin’s black eyes. She hadn’t imagined the color changes she witnessed at Cora's house; they had been a sign that something was definitely different about Devin Jordan. Devin stared down at her, his eyes dark as night.

Her heart rate increased. What was she doing? She was face-to-face with a beast, and all she could think about was licking him, somewhere, anywhere. His eyes held her captive. Vixen’s purrs broke through the fog her brain was in.

Alyssa sat up and watched Vixen rub against Devin’s legs, begging for attention. Alyssa smiled. The man had a way with pussies. Devin squatted down and rubbed the cat’s neck. For the first time ever, Alyssa felt jealous of her cat. She should be the one he rubbed.

“I’m sorry,” Devin muttered as he continued to pet Vixen.

Alyssa didn’t know if he was talking to her or talking to her pet.

“I’m talking to you, Alyssa.”

Devin stood up and headed toward the bathroom. Alyssa could hear running water. He returned with a cloth, using it to dry his hands.

“Did you just read my mind?”

“Yes.” Devin tossed the towel onto an empty chair.

“How do you do that?” Alyssa asked. She should be terrified like earlier. Instead, she was intrigued.

Devin ran a hand through his hair. “It’s a long, complicated story.”

“Shorten it for me.” Alyssa knew he was growing frustrated, but she needed to know. “What are you?”

Devin sat down on the bed. Alyssa fought the urge to scoot farther away from him. Something inside her told her he would not hurt her, that he would love her for as long as he lived. Nothing would ever change that.

She was his forever, and he was hers. He couldn’t change what he was. He didn’t ask to be a half-vampire, half incubus − hell − maybe half-human creature. Wait, how did she know that?

Where had those thoughts come from? Devin hadn’t moved. He still sat beside her on the bed with his head down, seemingly gathering his thoughts. His thoughts. She could hear his thoughts. Alyssa stood up.

“What are you doing to me?” Her fear and anxiety returned full force. Where were her survival skills? How had she let her guard down? Devin turned to her, both surprise and alarm registering on his face.
