THE HOME ORCHARD AND BERRY PATCH

I have an absolute love for juicy blueberries, freshly picked during summer. Their natural sweetness makes them the perfect snack to enjoy on a hot, humid day. Living in Georgia, I am fortunate to have peaches native to my region. One of my fondest summer memories is when my family gathered so many peaches that we had a fresh supply for months. As the seasons transition to fall, our fruit trees are adorned with red and green apples and tart pears, offering a bountiful harvest from our backyard.

Growing a home orchard and berry patch can offer numerous benefits to your home. My favorite is the nutritious and yummy produce they offer me year after year. The fruit I harvest from my yard is grown organically, and I know my family is getting the freshest, healthiest produce around—without the pesticides used in conventional farming techniques. But beyond that, fruit trees are low maintenance and improve soil health with their deep root systems, which break up the compact soil. Their leaves provide homes for pollinators and other beneficial insects and animals, and, once those leaves fall, I can use them as mulch. You don’t need hundreds of trees and acres of land to reap the benefits of an orchard. When I was growing up, my dad only had three trees in our backyard, yet we had bushels of pears each year. If you have limited space, investigate dwarf fruit tree varieties and berry varieties that do well in containers.
