Hope
Kindness is giving hope to those who think they are all alone in this world.
âAnonymous120
After my epic defeat of the Montrothity,121 we had a lengthy discussion on the effects of the knobs and what exactly they might do, during which I stuffed my face with pirate snacks (green olives, saltine crackers, grapes, and goat cheese), and Dumb Me ate some grass and kept trying to snuggle with Montroth. This, by the way, unsettled Montroth considerably. In the end, he beat Dumb Me up, and I decided to push Dumb Me off the next cliff we came to; he was literally making me look bad. Meanwhile, Tessa looked confused and jealous.
By the way, if you are keeping track of the knobs yourself, taking notes on that handy-dandy diagram provided in the front pages of this book, you may wish to know that the knobs I turned were C5, D1, D2, D3, D4, D5, E1, and E2, respectively.
In the end we all agreed that the knobs would require further testing before they could be named or their functions fully understood.122 I was particularly interested in the one which had apparently made time stop for everyone but me. No one really understood this one, so I pretended not to know what happened, either. What can I say? I wanted time to think. I tried each of the knobs again, but nothing happened. Usually the knobs worked only once per day and then reset at midnight, but some knobs didnât follow that rule.
When we were done, the Tike said that she needed some fresh air, and she took Montroth upstairs. No doubt for another round of threats. Before she left, she gave me the thermocharge and instructed me to take it straight to Captain Bast. Drake and Tessa both wanted to stay and work on the turncoat chart some more. Hawk followed Montroth upstairs, but before he left he took me aside, putting a hand on my shoulder.
âSimon,â he said, âI donât know all of what happened a moment ago, but it seemed to me as if you stopped time.â He raised an eyebrow, and I felt my cheeks color. âSimon, I must warn you about this. Many of the powers manifested by the turncoat are simply beyond our understanding. Sometimes, when you use them without fully understanding them, you risk your life. That, of course, is a price you are willing to pay. But, Simon, when you alter time, you risk the worldâ¦which, admittedly, is kind of your job.â He patted me on the back sympathetically and then walked away, leaving me to contemplate his words.
