Silver Clad & Plated Bullion Bars

A silver clad bar can be made in the same way as a clad or plated coin. These bars are often advertised as “collectible art bars” but they contain little silver and might be hard to resell. Do not confuse these bars with a solid bar of pure silver. If you enjoy collecting them that is fine as long as you know what you are buying.

Silver Clad and Plated

A silver bullion bar is clad or plated silver whenever you see the term mills, clad, layered, or 15 grains of silver. One of these should be found on the bar itself or in the product description. A good way to know the bar is clad is if it is being sold below the spot price of silver.

These bars are sometimes sold as “one troy ounce” but do not contain one ounce of pure silver. Like many other plated products, you probably won’t get your money back if you resell them. Two examples of clad bar labeling are shown below:
