Chapter 10 - Fliss

A QUIET BEEPING NOISE WOKE Fliss, but she was too comfortable to really wake up until she heard male voices arguing in undertones. She couldn’t quite catch all of it, but it sounded like someone had made some kind of mistake, and he was getting reamed for it by the other man. She didn’t know why there were men nearby, but she opened her eyes to find out—only to freeze as she realized she wasn’t at home or in Michael’s RV that she’d been dreaming about, but a hospital room.

She felt pretty foggy, but when she looked down, she saw her burned leg raised up on a pillow, a nurse smearing something on it that was cool to the touch. "What happened?" she asked, surprised at the way her voice rasped.

"Oh good, you’re awake." The woman smiled gently. "You were burned out in the woods near the wildfire. Do you remember going hiking with your boyfriend?"

The question startled her, but it also brought memories rushing back. "Oh, yeah, I guess."

"Fliss!" Michael’s relief was palpable before he swung into the room. His friend Aidan was right behind him, though the firefighter had a scowl on his face that he needed to try harder to erase.

Fliss blinked at both men, her eyes having trouble focusing. "Why am I dizzy?"

"Dizzy?" asked the nurse. "Let me get the doctor in here to lower your dose. We didn’t want you in pain." The blue scrubs that marked the woman in her double vision disappeared out the door.

The two men came closer, and it wasn’t too hard to guess which one reached out to take her hand. "I was really starting to worry."

"I’m okay, I think?" She wasn’t entirely sure, but her leg had looked pretty nasty, and yet it didn’t hurt. "I think they might’ve gone way over on pain meds. I’m not entirely sure I can feel my lower legs at all."

A thumb rubbed against her fingers. "That might’ve been my fault. You passed out from the pain while I was carrying you back. I told them as much."

She yawned, surprised at the action, and only managed to cover it belatedly with her free hand. "Sorry, it’s still making me sleepy, I guess."

"Maybe we should let you sleep," the other man’s voice cut in.

"Aidan," Michael growled, so quietly she almost didn’t hear it. "Back off." She heard a sigh, but that must have been acquiescence as Michael’s hand in hers relaxed.

"You carried me?" she asked, not entirely sure she remembered that.

"Yes, we were a ways out. Why?"

She shook her head, closing her eyes so the blurry vision didn’t distress her so much. "I don’t know. I thought I remembered… never mind."

There was a pause. "What do you remember?" Michael asked quietly.

"I'm not sure, exactly," she replied, trying to make sense of the mismatched images that didn’t make any sense whatsoever. "I can’t make sense of it, so I might’ve dreamed it after I passed out."

She heard footsteps and dragged her eyes
