Chapter Eighteen

Noelle

I limped from the couch to the stairs, my ankle hurting less by the day. My crutches were unnecessary and therefore discarded after the first week and that was five days ago. My uncle and his family had been by several times to visit and bring us dinner. They weren’t our only visitors, however. Nick showed up at least once a day to check on me and the state of my healing. I kept telling myself he was just trying to be sweet and do his job, but a little space might be in order since yesterday’s visit had lasted three hours. Ivy had ditched me after the first thirty minutes, claiming she needed to get to bed. But the sun had still been up, for heaven’s sake. Some sister she was.

Once I’d made it up the stairs to my room, I shut the door and stared at my phone. I hadn’t received another stalkerish email since the night of the ice-skating adventure, and while that brought continued relief, I also hadn’t received any further texts from Logan either. He had said to call if I needed anything, but what was I supposed to say? “Hey there! Nick is bugging me and I find you dangerously attractive, even if you don’t like Christmas. You should come over and make me laugh some more while I stare at you.”

Not going to happen. Especially not after he nearly sprinted out the door after having completed his good deed last week. If he wasn’t interested, then why should I be? Indifference was my new mantra, and I was going to wear it like an honorary badge. Besides, it was easier this way. I couldn’t imagine falling for a guy I had wronged so thoroughly.

I plopped onto my bed and enjoyed the self pitying bounce it allowed me. How did I go about confessing my sins to Logan? Did I really need to? The ordeal was over and done with after all. He would only be reminded of it all over again.

I sat up and attempted to shake away the negativity. But the rationalizing hadn’t worked...again. The guilt refused to be silenced and only continued to stir inside of me like Uncle Rob’s curry had taken up permanent residence in the pit of my stomach.

“Hey, Noelle.” Ivy tapped on the door before opening it and stepping inside my room.

“Come in,” I said sarcastically.

She folded her arms and leaned against the door frame, her pink sundress flowing effortlessly around her knees.

“Isn’t it a little cold outside to be wearing a sundress?”

“This old thing?” She fanned the dress out and stared at it like she’d never seen it before. “I just wanted to wear something casual around the cottage today.” She popped her neck and smiled.

Thoroughly annoyed by the sound, I only managed to hold my tongue by jamming it firmly between gritted teeth.

Ivy tilted her head and frowned. “You know, Noelle, you’ve sure been ornery since being cooped up. How about we go out
