Chapter 16

Graham

I stood outside Elle’s front door, my heart ticking away like a metronome, waiting for her to answer. When she finally did, she greeted me as if the previous day’s altercation had never occurred. Her eyes met mine, but the spark that used to ignite them was missing.

“Angel,” I said softly, lifting my hand to cup her face. For once, she didn’t recoil; she simply stared at me with an eerie blankness.

This was the moment. If something or someone had enchanted her, I’d break it here and now. My fingers tingled with latent energy as I focused on tapping into my powers. But despite my mental push, nothing happened. The magic was there, buzzing at my fingertips, but it was as if an invisible wall was preventing me from accessing it fully. It confirmed my suspicion that this had to be the work of an Enchantment, and a powerful one at that.

“What are you doing?” she asked, her tone monotone.

I sighed. “I was afraid it’d come to this.”

“What—”

I didn’t give her a chance to respond. Instead, I leaned forward and pressed a cloth doused in chloroform against her face. Desperate times, I supposed. She didn’t put up much of a fight, her body going limp in my arms as I carried her to my car. She would be angry when she woke up, so I bound her arms behind her back and taped her mouth. I was glad I asked Louis for these materials earlier.

Every fiber of my being told me that getting her away from Ravenswood was imperative. I started the engine and sped off, knowing full well that the real battle would commence when she woke up.

Each mile I covered increased the distance between Elle and whatever had a hold on her back in that town. The road ahead was empty, almost inviting, as if urging me to drive faster. The sky darkened as the city’s skyline came into view, punctuated by lights that seemed to shimmer like distant stars.

I pulled into the parking garage of my apartment complex, where security guards were already waiting for my arrival. I stepped out of the car and popped the trunk.

“Blindfold her,” I commanded the guards, “and take her upstairs.”

A guard hesitated, his eyes meeting mine. “Do you need Suite V, Mr. Faulk?”

The question hung in the air. Suite V was designed for high-security scenarios. While I would have preferred my personal suite, Elle would not be very pleasant to deal with in her current state. “Yes, Suite V will be suitable. But make sure she’s unharmed.”

As the guards carried out my orders, I couldn’t help pondering the complexity of the situation. Elle was no ordinary woman; she was my nemesis. Yet here I was, going to great lengths to save her from something even I didn’t fully understand.

I stepped into the elevator, my thoughts consumed with Elle, and what the next hours would bring. My fingers tingled again, an electric charge of anxious anticipation, as the elevator rose.
