With the last of the guests gone, Evelyn and I moved across the space picking up trash and clearing food.

“This was so much fun.” She gave her body a mini stretch.

“Thanks for putting this all together. It was a fun night. Sorry about the shit with Victoria.” I wanted to gauge her temperature now that she was coming down from her giddy drunken high, just to ensure we were good.

“So that was your ex?”

“Yep.”

“She’s really pretty.” Evelyn balanced several empty beer bottles in her arms.

“I just hope her being here didn’t make things awkward.”

“Nope. We both have a history. It’s cool. I actually thought it was kinda funny watching you squirm.”

“I noticed that.” Pulling the plastic bag from the recycling bin I held the bag open while she tossed the bottles in.

“So was she the one that got away?” Evelyn asked, sifting through the almost empty Halloween candy bowl.

“She was the one that I couldn’t get away from fast enough.”

“There’s no lingering feelings?”

“God no. Victoria was a lot of work. I get that relationships take work and need to be nurtured … blah, blah, blah, but everything with her was a fight. She wanted me to be this corporate sell out guy and that wasn’t appealing to me. I’m all for growth and change but at our base level we are who we are. And if I can’t be who I really am with the person I’m supposed to love then what’s the point.”

“When was the last time you saw her?”

“Maybe a year ago? At a legal conference.” I decided to omit the fact we had sex in my hotel room at that conference. Like Evelyn said we both had a past.

“Admit it. It felt kinda good to show her you are thriving and flourishing.”

I lifted a blasé shoulder, I’d had my fill of talking about my ex and was looking to shift the topic. “What I’m interested in is that coin flip.”

Evelyn’s gaze grew intense as she moved closer, erasing the distance between us. She kissed me on my neck just like the couple from her art piece that hung on the wall in the dining area. Grabbing her waist, I lifted her to the kitchen island, closing my eyes as her lips touched mine, her mouth tasted sweet from the Halloween candy she’d consumed the entire night. The thick zipper on the front of her costume slid down with ease and her ample breast popped out like a Jack-in-the-box. My knees grew weak as my heart accelerated in my rib cage. Burying my face in between her chest, I teased her skin with my tongue. A sigh parted her lips as my tongue grazed her nipple.

“I've been wanting this all night.” I nipped at her lips.

“What do you want?”

“I want you to sit on my fa—”

“Whoa, you two better not be having sex.” Evan called, shuffling into the living room.

“Shit.” Evelyn hopped off the counter zipping her suit. “Evan.”

“Why are you still here?” I asked.

Evan wobbled back and forth.
