HISTORY

During the mining days of the Tioga Pass area, prospectors knew the peak as “Tioga Hill.” But now it carries the name of Andrew Jack Gaylor (1846–1921), one of the first Yosemite rangers during his last fourteen years of life. Gaylor had also served as a civilian packmaster during the Spanish-American War. Before shipping out with the Rough Riders, he wrote these words of advice to his son: “Love many, trust few, and always paddle your own canoe.”

SIERRA SECRETS

Though this outing is short in both distance and elevation gain, the high elevation of the starting point and summit make this a better choice for those who have spent a few days in the mountains than for those who just drove up from sea level.

Gaylor Peak makes a nice snowy adventure for cross-country skiers and snowshoers soon after Tioga Road opens to automobiles in May or June.

Anglers report good fishing at Gaylor and Granite Lakes.
